HQ Readalong: The Getaway by Ross Armstrong

Join us between Monday 11th July and Sunday 17th for The Getaway readalong. Every day we’ll be reading a section of the nail-biting thriller together and sharing our thoughts on social media. Tag @HQStories, @RossArmstrongBook and use #TheGetaway to get involved!

Day 1:

Question 1 (Pg1-Pg30)

‘Robert sighed, his tongue sought out his top lip, something about the way he blinked. Unrest. This was a dangerous state, and I knew I had to put a stop to it at once.’ What are your first impressions of billionaire Robert Rathwell?

Day 2:

Question 2 (Pg31-Pg81)

What do you think, in principle, of the role of father figure that the Rathwells have created for JR? Do you think it’s helpful or might do more harm than good?

Day 3:

Question 3 (Pg82-Pg140)

Sophia tells Amelia on her first day that when in the Rathwells’ company ‘a quality of relaxed awareness was required…which meant you have to appear relaxed while being very wary.’ Do you find yourself feeling wary of them in this section and if so, what made you feel that way?

Day 4:

Question 4 (Pg141-Pg205)

Both JR and Bobby are revealed to have the name “Robert.” How similar do you feel they both are to Robert Rathwell?

Day 5:

Question 5 (Pg205-Pg270)

Kostas panics when Amelia and Isabelle drive away from the house. In this section of the novel, do you get a sense of claustrophobia from this key location, and what is it that contributes to this?

Day 6:

Question 6 (Pg270-Pg313)

Ben states in Chapter 35: ‘I think Robert preferred desperate people…single-parent children with troubled family lives…Robert knew all of us were in search of a father.’ Do you think that this is true, and do you think it’s caused by Robert’s relationships with his children?

Day 7:

Question 7 (Pg314-end)

Near the end of the novel Amelia reflects ‘I rarely thought of the little octet that once held me captive on Korpios, and when I did, I wondered how I’d been so intoxicated by proximity to that lifestyle.’ To what extent do you think that the Rathwells’ wealth was responsible for the tragic events on the island?
