For National Crime Reading Month, we asked some of our authors to recommend some of their favourite crime fiction novels. This week we are joined by Nadine Matheson, author of The Jigsaw Man and The Binding Room, who also discusses her love for independent bookshops!
Nothing beats reading in the garden on a gorgeous summer day during Independent Bookshop Week. I’ve just finished Lying Beside You by Michael Robatham which was a taut and atmospheric page-turner which made me think about how you would respond and move on from traumatic events in your life. Another recent read included, another great thrill ride which was The Echo Man by Sam Holland which did everything that it was supposed to by keeping me gripped to my seat and enjoying every single twist and turn. A sign of a great book is that it leaves you wanting more.
The Binding Room is the second book in the Detective Inspector Anjelica Henley series. I read a lot of books where there was a strong theme of the ‘ticking clock’ whilst I was writing The Binding Room, which included Winter Counts by David Heska Wanbli Weiden and Do No Harm by Jack Jordan. I was also influenced by Jane Casey and her Maeve Kerrigan series and Anne Cleves’s Shetland series. It’s brilliant and inspiring to see how these authors have developed their characters so that we learn more about them with each book and makes us eagerly await the next instalment.
Its been amazing seeing The Binding Room making its way out in the world during Independent Bookshop Week and being so well received by the amazing booksellers. I’m always impressed by strong characters in a book which is why seeing readers respond so enthusiastically to the return of Detective Inspector Anjelica Henley has been fantastic.
The Jigsaw Man is out now, and The Binding Room is coming July 7th.
